Landmannalaugar Super Jeep Tours from Reykjavik

The $189 day is the cheapest tour into the valley, full stop

Glaciers and Waterfalls runs an 11-hour super jeep from Reykjavík at $189, which undercuts every minibus and every hiking day on the market. It rates 4.8 from 358 reviews, carries Wi-Fi and USB ports, and its guide does the photography for you. The itinerary names Sigöldugljúfur, the canyon lined with waterfalls that listings sell as the Valley of Tears.

The one recurring complaint is legroom. "The seating was tight with minimal leg room (I'm average height)", one reviewer wrote in July 2026. On an eleven-hour day that is worth knowing before you book on price alone.

Take the Kalman Tours jeep if six people is the point

At $298 and capped at six guests, this is the small-group option, and the only listing here that provides anything to consume: bottled water and Icelandic snacks. It rates 4.9, though on nine reviews, which is too small a sample to lean on. The itinerary adds the Fossabrekkur waterfall and the Hnausapollur crater, and it markets Sigöldugljúfur as the Valley of the Thousand Tears.

Six seats also means real flexibility. Reviewers on the small-group jeeps describe guides swapping a stop for a better one when the weather turns, which is not something a nineteen-seat vehicle can do.

The Gravel Travel day is the most expensive and the most loaded

$324.53 buys hotel pickup, a professional driver and guide, the Landmannalaugar facility fee, and the longest list of stops of the four: Sigöldugljúfur, Háifoss, Hjálparfoss, Gjáin and Frostastaðavatn, plus a halt at the foot of Hekla. It approaches on road 225, Landmannaleið, rather than the usual line, and its operator page describes a three-hour stop with a 4.5 km hike inside it.

Group size is up to nineteen. The reviews are the most enthusiastic of the four at 4.8 from 104, and they repeatedly mention unplanned extras: an unscheduled drive up a volcano, a detour to a spot the guide liked. One review from October 2025 also confirms this operator keeps running past the ordinary road season.

The Arctic Adventures jeep is the one that takes younger children

At $239.13 with a minimum age of six, this is the only super jeep here that will take a primary-school child. The route stops at Hjálparfoss and Sigöldufoss, a ten-metre waterfall on the Tungnaá, then crosses the rivers into the valley and finishes at the Ljótipollur crater lake on the way out, with Hekla in view for much of the drive.

Its rating is 4.5 from 24 reviews, the weakest of the four on both counts. That is a thin sample rather than evidence of a bad operator, and it is the same company that runs the most-reviewed hiking day in the valley. At the campsite you choose between a guided hike and the hot spring rather than doing both.

None of the four includes lunch

Read the inclusions to the bottom and food and drink sits in the excluded column on all four, including the Gravel Travel listing that names lunch. That operator's own website says it plainly: food and drink are not included, and the group stops at a mini-market in Þjórsárdalur so you can buy something. The Kalman jeep hands out bottled water and Icelandic snacks and excludes meals.

Bring the lunch from Reykjavik.

Lifted body, oversized tyres, lowered pressure

An Icelandic super jeep starts as an ordinary 4x4 and gets a suspension lift, re-cut arches, 38 to 44 inch tyres and often a snorkel for the air intake. The tyres are the point. Dropped to a few PSI they flatten out, spread the vehicle's weight across soft ground and hold a line in moving water that a standard rental cannot.

On the F-roads into Fjallabak that translates into two practical things: fords the vehicle can read rather than gamble on, and a longer season. Super jeep operators often keep running into October, after standard 4x4 access has ended.

The fords are the reason the tour exists

Icelandic law allows only 4x4 vehicles on F-roads, and the water is what stops most people driving themselves. No standard or premium rental car insurance sold in Iceland covers water damage from a river crossing, so drowning an engine in the Námskvísl is entirely your bill. The two largest crossings sit on F224 immediately before the campsite, and the first significant one on the southern approach, near the Hólaskjól hut, runs roughly 40 to 60 cm deep in average summer conditions and deepens through the afternoon as the day's meltwater arrives.

In a super jeep none of that is your problem. Where the DIY route works sets out the case for driving it yourself. Reviewers treat it as entertainment: "journey in highlands was an adrenaline rush with river wading and off-roading", wrote one in October 2025.

What is the best road to Landmannalaugar?

There is no single best one, and the operators do not agree. F208 north with F225 off Route 26 is the standard approach and the one most tours use, with Landmannaleið as the scenic variant that Gravel Travel takes. F208 south, up from the Ring Road near Vík, is longer, emptier and carries more water, which is why it appears on itineraries far less often. The last few kilometres are F224 whichever way you come.

For a passenger the answer is simpler: the road the operator picks on the morning, after reading the river levels.

What does Landmannalaugar mean?

It breaks into land-manna-laugar, the pools of the people of Land, after the farmers of the Landsveit district who used the geothermal water here during the autumn sheep round-ups. The pool itself is still called the People's Pool. The bathing predates tourism by centuries, which is worth remembering while you are queueing to get into it in July.

Who these tours will not take

Minimum ages are the sharpest divider between these four, and they have nothing to do with price.

• Age 6 and up on the Arctic Adventures jeep, the most family-friendly of the four
• Age 8 and up on the Gravel Travel 4x4, which also excludes people with mobility impairments
• Age 10 and up on the Valley of Tears jeep and the Kalman small group
• Wheelchair users are excluded on the Valley of Tears day
• Alcohol and drugs are not allowed on board on any of them

Is Landmannalaugar worth it?

Eleven hours for three on the ground is a real cost, and the honest answer depends on what else is on your list. If you have already done the Golden Circle and the south coast, this is the day that shows you something those two cannot: rhyolite mountains in ochre and green, a 550-year-old obsidian field, steaming ground, and a warm river to sit in at the end of it.

The reviews back that up more consistently than for most Icelandic day trips. "A great day trip seeing parts of Iceland I never would've ventured to by myself," one traveller wrote in June 2026. What to bring

Nothing is sold in the valley and the weather changes inside an hour, even in July.

• Hiking boots: the lava is sharp and the scree on the slopes moves
• Waterproof jacket and over-trousers, warm layers, a hat and gloves
• Swimsuit and towel, worn under your clothes if you would rather not change on the boardwalk
• A packed lunch and water bought in Reykjavik or at the Hella stop
• Motion sickness tablets taken before the F-road section, not during it
• A camera you do not mind holding on a rough road

Book early in your trip, not on your last day

The road closes for weather, the rivers rise, and the season swings by a fortnight at each end. Put the highlands on a free day near the start of your stay and a cancellation still leaves you a second chance. All four refund in full when the operator cancels, and all four cancel free up to 24 hours ahead with nothing paid at booking.
